I loved drawing since the day I was born. I’m pretty sure I remember doodling a character sketch or two in the hospital bassinet to pass the time until I was brought home and discovered a tv in the corner that shows Mighty Mouse and Bugs Bunny.
My dream was always to draw a newspaper comic strip.
Many cartoon characters and comic strip ideas were fleshed out as I grew up including when they would become Saturday morning cartoons. Notebook after notebook was filled with Spud comics I drew in physics and calculus for the amusement of my friends.
The boring, logical side of me saw no money in comics so my post-secondary school and career path ventured through computer animation, web design and now social media.
Tap, tap, tap
My love of drawing comics and classic animation persisted until it became a full blown monster standing behind me in my office cubicle incessantly tapping me on the shoulder and next thing I knew, I was experimenting with paint, conté crayons, markers, oil pastels and even charcoal (my arch nemesis in school).
Cartoon Fine Art is born
It was my joy of cartoons and the cool stuff I saw in art galleries that made me experiment and, dare I say, mash up fine art and cartoon illustration. Ok, so it has been done before but it was fun almost-inventing it.
In any case, it was love at first sight. This is what I wanna do!
Web designer + Spud comics + freelance illustration + cartoon fine art = SuperSpud.com!
Add to that SpudCast, a podcast about myself and being creative to do cool things. And all the other social media tools that pop up overnight and how it can benefit the artist. Like Twitter, Flickr, Circavie, LinkedIn and Facebook.
A few other enjoyments
When I’m not drawing or tending to my various social media profiles, I’m in the gym lifting a weight, putting it back down, repeat. Or I’m listening to music or trying to find true love.
