Thanks for your comment, Brent! I like your idea of searching the web via direct messages with your cell phone instead of Rogers. Brilliant! I don't know how many times I was stuck in the same situation. Never thought of asking my twitter peeps.

Hi Daniele:

Yes, my favourite use of Twitter is staying connected with people I have met at various conferences, unconferences, and meetups. Quite often we meet and hit it off with people at these events, but quickly forget them when we get home. I like that Twitter allows me to stay connected to them and create a more solid relationship.

Cheers,
Connie

I started using Twitter after Podcamp Toronto last year too and I think you and I have probably had very similar experience over the past year with it.

Very few of my offline friends use Twitter despite me raving about it for the past year. I repeatedly say that it's my favorite part of the internet.

Things that twitter did for me in 2007:
- Get me a great freelancer on short notice
- Help me answer bizarre about problems with web development work not suited to Google
- Helped me search the web via direct msgs with my mobile phone without having to pay insane Rogers data rates
- a few impromptu summer patio "tweet-ups" (meet ups)
- kept me in touch with ppl I probably wouldn't email or call because I'm terrible at it

Actually, the laptops are for all countries. In fact, Uruguay is reported to have ordered quite a lot of the laptops. The project is in its infancy and because the idea is so radical, I'm sure it will take a while before other countries order laptops, too.

(Adding to my previous comment.)

That is, if these laptops are really made to provide poor children with better education.

Or even better, schools should not ban the internet from the computer laboratories, but look for a way to implement it in the classroom, while at the same time keeping it safe. There is always a way. Of course that abuse will always be present, but that cannot be avoided.

I think OLPC should provide laptops for all countries, since there is poverty everywhere, and not only in Africa. After all, it's "One Laptop Per Child".
Indeed, no country should be excluded.
This would be great in Puerto Rico, too. Especially with the horrible quality of education that is being given here. And I seriously mean that.

Your presentation is exactly the kind of thing I'm interested in. I call it "applied social media" :)

I'm sure social media will become a lot more commonplace as corporations become comfortable with it. If not, the entering workforce will change that.

Hi Daniele,

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the presentation. I think social media has immense potential for crisis communications.

As more and more 'traditional' news media take advantage of these tools, hopefully larger organizations will begin to do so too.

I stumbled across that a few days before your presentation. Your VP made a great case for investor relations getting into blogging. After all, your shareholders are pretty much your customers. Well, bosses ;)
